After receiving this filter damaged, and returning it (easy, quick process – thanks Amazon!), I ordered another, which arrived in just a few days. Fairly easy to install. A couple minor issues:

When on high (variable speeds, remember), a small amount of water drains back out into the tank on the intake side of the filter. Not a huge deal, but frustrating. An overflow hole in the media cage should drain the water out onto the correct (outflow) side of the filter, but it doesn’t. I have it set to a slightly lower setting, which fixes the issue.

The cheap plastic cover vibrates and increases sound. Not a whole lot, and I should be able to minimize that by putting a few pieces of rubber seal under it. But then, Aquaclear could/should have done the same.

My tank has a slightly wider-than-normal rim, so the filter doesn’t quite fit perfectly as it hangs over; it is probably 1/2 inch higher off the rim than designed (though still level), which increases waterfall distance, and therefore noise. I could try jamming it down further, but I would imagine its plastic case would crack.

Overall, after 3 days, it works fairly well, and isn’t terribly noisy, and thanks to the media cage design, I can be creative with the media make-up (carbon is generally unnecessary and can be replaced with anything you’d like).

our tank design has lips at top, so we can’t put the water level too high. the water comes out of the filter and falls a good 5-6 inches thru the air into the tank. if you can fill the tank up until the filter outlet is under water, maybe you won’t have this problem. for us, it is like a running water fountain in the house 24/7. personally I don’t mind much, but other family members, especially for the one whose bedroom is near the fish tank, do not like the noise.

the other problem is the activated carbon filter leaks. I tried to tame the noise by putting a paper towel over teh outlet, so water will flow down into the tank with less sound. within one day, the white paper towel turned grey, having caught the fine particles coming out of the activated carbon filter. If I hadn’t put the paper towel on, I might never notice this problem.

overall, the water in the tank is clear.

We have a 50 gallon aquarium. This filter ROCKS! Keeps it very clean despite 2 very large oscars, 1 lg parrot and 1 XL pleco. The Oscars routinely eat tiny golds which makes LOTS of stuff to filter. We are thrilled and the price was the best!

The filter, from Just phish, arrived quickly and was better than I thought. I had a smaller version for the past 20 years. It worked flawlessly, so I wanted another one. I read a review about the noise made by the aqua clear 70 and was concerned because I like a very quiet operation. I ordered it and it is amazing. I installed the filter and in 15 minutes the water was crystal clear! The “noise” is the water falling into the aquarium. It is a wonderful sound… very relaxing! The ceramic pieces are new to the filter, at least new to me. I like how it keeps the water clean and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to maintain!

This filter actually worked great, until I neglected to clean it for a month. After that the impeller conked out and i bought a new one but still no deal. I looked it up and tried to super clean it with white vinegar, but so far no deal. i wish that it was like my marineland filter and had a second “cover” to make sure things didn’t get into the impeller, but if you make sure to clean out the impeller ever couple of weeks, I guess you won’t have a problem.

When it worked, it was great. It, along with my Marineland Emperor Filter 280 kept my water pretty crystal clear. That’s probably because I’m using them both on a 55g, but I figured better too much than too little, with such messy fish. Tis was probably more of a powerhouse than the marineland, because when it died, the water started turning green and getting funky. I recommend it, but would also recommend having another one for the other side of the aquarium it you have messy fish.
